Contemporary COASTAL CHIC in Zinkwazi
Glass marquee weddings are a personal favourite of mine, and when you pair one with a tropical beach setting for a luxury wedding in KZN, I’m on cloud nine! In fact, the whole Oh Happy Day team absolutely adored working on Mich and Brett’s Dolphin Coast wedding last year. Not just because of the fabulous location, rich, moody colour palette, and creative design touches. It was also memorable for the bride’s infectious, joyful enthusiasm for every step of the wedding planning process. We really are so lucky to work with the amazing clients we do, and this gorgeous couple was no exception.
One of the most meaningful aspects of this celebration was the venue itself. Mich’s family owns a beach house in Zinkwazi, a magnificent, unspoilt stretch of the Kwazulu Natal North Coast (and a dream location for Durban destination weddings). Some of Mich and Brett’s best memories are from time spent in Zinkwazi, so it was only natural that they chose it for their big day. We decided to build a clear marquee over the Zinkwazi Lagoon, so guests could really enjoy the views of lush indigenous forest, blue waters, and golden sands.
We quickly realised after meeting the couple that Mich isn’t really the girly girl type. Her personality is far more bold and vibrant, and we wanted to reflect this in the design. We paired classic blush with a beautifully rich ruby red, along with touches of black to make it more structured and moody. Tropical elements were fused with modern touches to create a look we termed ‘contemporary coastal chic’. Perfect for a KZN destination wedding!
One of the key features was a spectacular 10m tall installation behind the main table, which our floral designer Ro created out of tropical foliage. On the tables were artful arrangements of both tropical and garden blooms, surrounded by dramatic black taper candles. At each place setting, sleek black plates and smoky glassware were set off with bold pops of colour from the red napkins, while overhead, a mix of statement lamp shades and hanging bulbs created additional visual interest. With the candles lit, reflecting the starry skies above, guests danced the night away.
